Newsletters

Newsletters have significantly changed since the birth of email in the early 1970s. The combination of almost instant delivery and negligible cost has fueled its growth and popularity to the extent that some subscribers have tools to 'manage' their subscriptions. In addition, social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and soon Google+ have provided (along with blogging and RSS) increased options and sophistication by which readers gather information - the best newsletter solutions maximize exposure though Social Media and RSS.

There are three types of newsletters:

  • Embedded (received as a readable email with headlines, pictures and text)
  • Attached – most often as a PDF
  • Link is sent – these can be very sophisticated – with fully featured 'online magazine' look and feel

Embedded emails

The advantage is that the impact of the message is received immediately. This is particularly well suited for immediate response campaigns.

Attached Newsletters

With this option, it's usual that a PDF is attached to each email and sent. PDFs can include links and even videos, however care needs to be taken so that the size (data) of the email remains small.

Link to Newsletters

This style of newsletter is really an alert that a website based new newsletter is ready to view. Solutions range from basic website based newsletters through to fully featured online magazines.

Combination

Most common are the embedded newsletters that have snippets or teasers that prompt reader to 'click for more' to an online location. These can work very well when there is a lot more information, large pictures or video.
